Biography

Sam Hardy’s research focuses on religious and spiritual development, primarily during adolescence and young adulthood. More specifically, Dr. Hardy studies predictors, processes, and outcomes of religious/spiritual development. He also studies moral development and identity formation and often how they intersect with each other and with religious/spiritual development. Much of Dr. Hardy’s work involves longitudinal and mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) designs.

Research Interests

Current research topics include: (1) religious conversion, deconversion, and reconversion; (2) Latter-day Saints and the ways they are similar to and different from other religious groups; and (3) religious/spiritual struggles and spiritual yearning, including links between religion/spirituality and mental health.
