Andrew Phan

Coming to BYU from Gilbert, Arizona, Andrew Phan is a senior in the Psychology major. Andrew is a part of the BYU chapter of Psi Chi. In his free time, he enjoys sleeping, hanging out with friends, taking photographs of nature, and Star Wars!

One class that has greatly impacted Andrew, he shared, is Positive Psychology: “I would heavily recommend Positive Psychology. It was just super interesting, and I want to explore it further with whatever I end up doing. I've become a lot more thankful and appreciative of the little things and it helps with the stress I experience in school and life in general. I feel like everyone should take it because it really is applicable to everyone. We so often find ourselves caught up in the negative aspects of life without giving ourselves room to breathe and instead enjoying life as it happens.”

Andrew also enjoys his time as a research assistant for Dr. Sephton. He said, “I'm a research assistant for Dr. Sephton right now and we're going to study how mindfulness can help minority populations here at BYU! There are definitely unique stressors that come with being a racial minority, nonmember, or part of the LGBTQ+ community here at BYU, and I want to be able to help those people feel better about being here. We haven't started yet, but when we do, contact us! I also worked as a psych tech over at Utah State Hospital (by Seven Peaks). When it came to those with really intense psychopathology and mental illness, I was able to understand those patients better and separate their mental illness from who they were as a person.”

Thanks for introducing yourself, Andrew!
