Listen More Initiative
(Responsible Subcommittee: Education)
Listen More is a periodic event in which the student-led BD Committee partners with a campus resource office (e.g., MSS), faculty group (e.g., psychology faculty women), or student club/organization (e.g., FIGSO) to sponsor an invited presentation or panel, sometimes followed by a social gathering or event (e.g., Multicultural “Friendsgiving,” hosted every November; “Meet Us at the Chocolate Fountain,” hosted every March, “Understanding and Navigating the First-Gen Experience,” etc.). The purpose of the series is to enhance understanding within, heighten awareness about, or celebrate/serve/network with a specific underrepresented group in the Psychology Department to enhance unity and belonging.
YOU Matter! Initiative
(Responsible Subcommittee: Intersectionality)
YOU Matter! is a periodic event, hosted in a campus booth near the Wilkinson Student Center or (preferably, to engage more psychology students) at a table near the Kimball Tower, during which passersby are invited to consider how and why they matter in the campus community. Treats are provided, and students may opt to participate in a hands-on, interactive exercise. First, they are asked to review a list of designations/identifiers that President Russell M. Nelson has recently asked us to prioritize (these will be prominently displayed on a poster near the booth/table):
1. We are children of God.
2. Many of us are also "children of the covenant" (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
3. We can be disciples of Christ.
Second, students are asked to consider: “What else makes you—YOU? What specific, personal attributes are you grateful for? How do your special attributes/designations/identifiers contribute to the BYU community?
