Where Can I Go for Help?

If you experience inappropriate comments, stories, inquires, or advances and are troubled about expressing your concerns, the resources below can provide safe and helpful options for students who would like to express even minor concerns, hunches, or feelings about a professor or situations that seem inappropriate.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS; 1500 WSC, 801-422-3035): Assists with issues such as academic and career concerns, aggression and potential violence, anxiety, depression, grief, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and suicide.

Dean of Family, Home and Social Sciences: Laura Padilla-Walker (990 KMBL) oversees issues with the department chair in their role as a professor; in addition, problems not resolved by the chair or agreed upon by the student can be petitioned to the dean.

Equal Opportunity Office: Shawn Smith in Human Resources (D-276 ASB; 801-422-2845) can help students experiencing hateful or discriminatory comments in their jobs at BYU, including those working with professors.

Multicultural Student Services (MSS; 1320 WSC, 801-422-3065): Helps if a student is experiencing microaggressions in class and on or off campus. Moises Aguirre is the Director.

Office of Belonging (2400 WSC; 801-422-9162; officeofbelonging@byu.edu): Offers advisors who are available to meet with students one-on-one to discuss individual concerns, questions, and ideas regarding inclusion and belonging on campus.

Psychology Department Belonging & Diversity Committee: Faculty members Dawn-Marie Wood (1072 KMBL), Sandie Sephton (1052 KMBL), Melissa Jones (272 TLRB), Daniel Kay (1090 KMBL), Chelsea Romney (1060 KMBL), and Juan Valladares (1042 KMBL) can help if you are not sure where to go or what to do. They will listen and try to help you decide what you might do to get additional assistance.

Psychology Department Chair: Gary Burlingame (1082 KMBL, 801-422-7557) can help students when they want to discuss or report a grievance regarding inappropriate behavior and comments by a professor related to topics of sex, gender, race, and identity.

Sexual Assault Survivor Advocate: Lisa Leavitt (1500 WSC, 801-422-9071, advocate@byu.edu) assists students who have experienced rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, or other interpersonal violence. She also provides support, guidance, and information to help students make more informed choices regarding their situation, including if they want to file a report with the police or Title IX Office.

Title IX Office (11085 WSC, 801-422-8692): For victims of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or other gender-based harassment, whether the offense occurred on or off campus.

Women's Services & Resources (3326 WSC): Director Dixie Sevison (801-422-4455, dixie_sevison@byu.edu) is happy to meet with female and male students one-on-one to help them know how and where to get additional help. This office is a confidential reporting office, meaning that whatever is discussed here is kept in the office.
